FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GUESTHOUSE BECOMES FIRST CERTIFIED GREEN RESTAURANT®
IN CANADA
Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada - May 2009.
Guesthouse Restaurant is proud to be the very first
Certified Green Restaurant® in
Canada! Guesthouse began greening their operation in
November 2008 with help from the Green Restaurant
Association (GRA), and in only 7 months, earned
certification after completing 9 environmental
steps. The GRA is a US-based non-profit organization
that specializes in helping restaurants become more
environmentally sustainable through their
certification program.
“We’ve
been serving up great food to our customers for over
8 years, and now we can offer them piece of mind
too,” says owner, Al Scherer. “When they see our
Certified Green Restaurant®
distinction on the window, they’ll know we’re doing
our part to waste fewer resources, conserve energy,
recycle, and source sustainable food.”
Through
their work with the GRA, the restaurant has
accomplished 9 environmental steps under the GRA’s
guidelines. Their steps include installing low-flow
faucet aerators in their kitchen to conserve water,
a full-scale recycling program, and non-toxic
chafing fuel for their buffet area.
"Guesthouse
is off to a great start in
becoming
more environmentally sustainable, and we're thrilled
about their Certified Green Restaurant®
status," says Michael Oshman, Executive Director of
the Green Restaurant Association. “We hope this sets
an example for their restaurant peers in Canada –
we’d love to help more restaurants earn our
certification and reduce their environmental
impact.”

1990, long before green was cool, the GRA utilizes a
collaborative strategy that involves restaurants,
manufacturers, vendors, community organizations,
government, media, and restaurant customers. The
GRA's model provides a convenient way for all
sectors of the restaurant industry, which represents
10% of the total U.S. economy, to become more
environmentally sustainable. The GRA has the
world’s largest database of environmental solutions
for the restaurant industry and has been featured on
CNN, NBC Nightly News, NPR, in The New York Times,
The Washington Post, and in several other
